Every search is a small clue. People type questions in search bars. These questions tell what they want at that time. These are clues, as I mentioned. Add up thousands of clues and you get a trend.

Smart businesses keep an eye on these trends. It helps them identify the growing demand for a particular thing. They have the time to test ideas and take advantage of the trends before their competitors notice.

Here is how to do the same on a small budget.

Watch Search Trends, Not Just Search Volume

Search volume indicates the number of people searching for something. On the other hand, trends indicate the direction to which that amount moves. One is a snapshot. The other is a direction.

Google Trends is a good free place to start. Type in a service you sell and check the past two years. If you want help turning this data into steady traffic, visit Ignite Digital Canada and see how local SEO fits in.

Then compare your term with a few related phrases. Is the line rising, flat or falling? That answer shapes everything you do next.

Spot Rising Demand Before Rivals Do

Search interest often jumps before sales do. The best time to act is while the line is climbing and the market still feels quiet.

Watch for sharp jumps over one or two months. Long phrases matter too, like “gluten free birthday cake near me.” They show what people really need. In 2024, searches for Dubai chocolate saw a sharp rise. It was after a viral TikTok video by influencer Maria Vehera in late 2023 amassed over 120 million views. Stores like Marks & Spencer quickly launched their own versions. They launched their own Big Daddy Pistachio bar.

Check your own site as well. Open Search Console and sort queries by growth. New phrases you never targeted are often free hints.

Check Whether a Trend Will Last

A spike on its own is not conclusive. Some trends are short-lived; others remain for years. Be sure to see indications of sustainability before taking action.

    • Steady interest: Searches should hold for two to three months. A single burst is a warning.
    • Related searches: Nearby terms should rise too. That points to a wider shift.
    • Seasonal pattern: Compare year to year and some trends return every winter, so plan for them.
    • Local demand: Zoom into your province or city. National hype may never reach your area.

Track these in a simple sheet and update it every two to four weeks. Patterns become clear fast.

Test Small Before You Spend Big

You should not build a new strategy just based on this single trend. This is only speculation. Create an initial landing page using the new keyword and test it over a few weeks.

Note the number of clicks, phone calls, and sign-ups. In case you see positive responses, then you should consider investing more. If not, simply discard the idea, as you risk nothing much.

Seasonal trends need early action. People search for gift ideas as early as August. Publish your pages weeks ahead, so search engines have time to trust them.

Know When to Skip a Trend

Not all trends will suit you. If the current trend doesn’t suit your brand, it will bring you the wrong crowd. Buyers are often sick of brands that follow every trend.

Ask three simple questions. Do we serve this need? Can we deliver it well? Will it still make sense next year? If the answer is no, walk away.

Good growth comes from picking a few trends and doing them well. Check your data every month and let the numbers guide your next move.
